Pizza hot dogs
Two cookout favorites collide in this playful mash-up: charred beef hot dogs dressed in pizza sauce, melted mozzarella, pepperoni, and olives, then finished on the grill until everything's bubbling. It comes together in well under 20 minutes and is always a hit with kids and adults alike.
Instructions
Prepare a grill for direct, medium-high heat. Grill the sausages, turning occasionally, until cooked through and lightly charred, 6 to 8 minutes.
While the sausages cook, stir the oregano into the pizza sauce.
Nestle each sausage into a bun. Top with a spoonful of sauce, about a tablespoon of mozzarella, a few pieces of pepperoni, a scattering of olives, then the remaining cheese.
Return the dogs to the grill, or move them to a cooler spot, just until the cheese melts, about 1 minute. Serve right away.
Notes
Look for knockwursts or another good-quality all-beef hot dog with a real snap. Thinner dogs cook faster, so shorten the grill time accordingly.
No grill? Assemble the dogs on a sheet pan and broil for a minute or two, watching closely, until the cheese melts.
Toast the buns lightly on the grill before assembling for extra crunch and so they hold up better to the sauce.
Once the cheese goes on, keep a close eye on the grill — it melts fast, and the pepperoni can start to curl and crisp if left too long.
Variations
Swap the mozzarella for provolone or a pizza cheese blend for a sharper, meltier finish.
Scatter crushed red pepper flakes over the top for some heat.
Try mini pepperoni or chopped banana peppers for a different bite.
Use turkey or plant-based hot dogs for a lighter version.
Pizza dogs are a small bit of American cookout ingenuity — the kind of recipe born from asking why hot dog night and pizza night can't just be the same meal. Piling pizza toppings onto a split, grilled hot dog is a backyard shortcut that's shown up in home kitchens and family cookbooks for decades, valued less for any single origin story and more for turning two crowd-pleasers into one fast, no-fuss dinner.
