A golden, savory pie with a luscious cheesy interior that's perfect for family dinners or casual gatherings. Easy to prepare and irresistibly delicious, this recipe is a comforting classic.
Ingredients
Instructions
Heat water with a little salt in a large pan and boil the pasta with the onion and pepper until the pasta is done, for about 10 minutes. Drain and put back in the pan.
Heat the oven to 350ºF. Grease a casserole dish or baking pan.
Mix half the grated cheese with pasta and vegetables. Stir slowly over a low heat until the cheese melts. Incorporate the evaporated milk and beaten egg.
Place the macaroni cheese mixture in the greased casserole dish. Bake until set, 20-25 minutes. Remove from the oven and let it stand for 10 minutes.
Cut into squares and serve warm.
Notes
Boil the macaroni with the chopped onions and peppers for added flavor and added vegetables. Make sure not to overcook the pasta, it should be al dente to maintain texture when baked.
Ensure the mixture is evenly spread in the dish for uniform cooking. Allow the pie to cool for 10 minutes after baking to set properly for slicing.
Variations
Use sharp Cheddar for the best flavor, but feel free to mix in other cheeses like Gouda or Monterey Jack for added creaminess. Swap in dairy-free cheese for a vegan-friendly option or use a blend of cream cheese and Parmesan for extra richness.
For a protein boost, add cooked and crumbled bacon, shredded chicken, or flaked tuna. It will be a more filling dish.
Mix in cooked spinach, mushrooms, or broccoli for a veggie-packed version.
Incorporate diced jalapeños or a pinch of cayenne pepper for a touch of heat.
Substitute the wheat pasta with gluten-free pasta to accommodate dietary restrictions while maintaining the comforting flavors of the dish.
