Mint julep
Crisp, invigorating, and aromatic, this classic drink blends the sweetness of sugar, the vibrant freshness of mint, and the bold warmth of bourbon, all crowned by a mountain of crushed ice. Its cooling charm makes it the perfect companion for long summer afternoons or celebratory gatherings.
Instructions
Place the fresh mint leaves at the bottom of a sturdy glass or Julep cup. Add the sugar.
Gently muddle the mint and sugar together using a muddler or the back of a spoon. Press lightly to release the mint’s fragrant oils and avoid over-crushing, as this can make the flavor bitter.
Pour bourbon into the glass over the muddled mint and sugar. Stir gently to combine and blend the flavors.
Fill the glass with crushed ice, mounding it up to the rim. Garnish and serve.
Notes
You can substitute 1 teaspoon of sugar with 1/2 ounce simple syrup.
Crushed ice is key; it keeps the drink icy cold and creates that signature frosty exterior on the Julep cup.
Powdered sugar for garnish and a fresh mint sprig to elevate presentation are optional, but recommended. Give the mint sprig a gentle clap between your hands before placing it in the glass to release its aroma, this provides a delightful sensory touch as you sip.
Ensure you have all your ingredients ready to go and fresh mint handy for that vibrant, signature flavor.
Variations
To make a berry mint julep, add 4-5 fresh berries with the mint leaves and sugar and muddle together. The vibrant addition of fresh berries will take your classic mint julep to a new level.
