Croque monsieur

A delicious hot sandwich. Serve with French green salad for a light meal.

Ingredients

2 slices ham (cooked ham, thick slices)
4 slices bread (white bread, crust removed)
2 ounces cheese (Gruyere cheese, 2 slices or 1/2 cup grated)
2 tablespoons butter

Instructions

Take a slice of bread and butter lightly one side. Place ham slice on the buttered side and cheese slice on top of ham. Finish with a second buttered bread slice, butter side down, to make a sandwich. Press firmly to help hold the sandwich together.

Heat 1 tablespoon butter Fry sandwich in butter for 3-5 minutes each side, until golden and crisp on both sides.

While first sandwich is cooking, make a second sandwich. Once the first one is cooked, add more butter to the pan and fry the second.

Notes

Grated cheese melts faster. Substitute 1 cheese slice with 1/4 cup grated cheese.

Sprinkle grated cheese on top of the sandwich just before serving.

Very nourishing and comforting for a light meal in a chill day.

Top a croque monsieur with a fried egg and a some béchamel sauce to make a croque madame.
