redcurrant

Name pluralredcurrants

Redcurrants are small, translucent, bright red berries that grow in clusters. They have a refreshing, distinctly tart flavor with a mild sweetness and are used in jams, jellies, sauces, desserts, syrups, drinks, and savory accompaniments, particularly with game and roasted meats.

Redcurrants are common in many parts of Europe but are less widely available in the United States, where fresh currants have historically had limited commercial production. When in season, look for them at farmers' markets, specialty produce stores, European groceries, or well-stocked supermarkets. Frozen redcurrants can sometimes be found in specialty stores or ordered online and are a good substitute when fresh berries are unavailable.
